Recording progress

Well it has been a few weeks – I gorged on drums and then sank into a drum hangover. When I regained my sanity, I learned that the drum tracks were finished and the guitar tracks were well underway.

Behold the Franken-kit! This is the set up I went with. I won’t bore you with the details but the basics are maple toms, birch kick and a brass snare. The drum sizes are slightly smaller (than usual) and I used my smaller cymbals as well.

This is Leo – bassist, engineer and one well organized guy.  His planning helped the drum tracks go very smoothly.  He even supplied pretty much all the food for the weekend as well as energy drinks ,gatorade, coffee – it was awesome! Thanks again Leo ( and his work has only just begun…)

Here is Zac – singer, guitarist AND bassist. He helped keep morale high through out the weekend. Zac barely left all weekend and he wasn’t even technically recording his parts…the guy slept over! He’s got enough energy for 2 bands and then some.

Zac is most of the way through his guitar tracks…but that is another story – stay tuned!

The Calm Before the Storm

Hey everyone!
Just checking in to mention Shall Not Fall are commencing our first demo tomorrow morning. Expect a lot of photos and maybe videos to show the action.

This snare to be featured on the demo...or will it!

This snare to be featured on the demo…or will it?

We start with the most important instrument (DRUMS – duh!) Tomorrow morning. If i do my part well, drums will be complete by the end of our 2 day session. I’m looking at doing it in 1 day though lol!
How many cups of coffee will it take for me to finish drum tracks? Stay tuned!

Fall Forward

One week – actually less until Shall Not Fall begin to record our inaugural demo. It seems we have all the details figured out – the plans have been made and all that is left is the execution. But anyone who has gone through the recording process knows – you can never plan for everything. Still – fail to plan, plan to fail.

bundle o' sticks

Drum journal #2:

The drumsticks have arrived and my headphones seem to be holding up. So it is looking like I shouldn’t  have any issues with tracking drums. No new broken sticks this week, I have been reigning myself in because  there IS a such thing as too much energy/effort being  expended. To play well (and especially fast) looseness is the key. Even after all these years I can always improve on playing more loose and relaxed. In my own defense those sticks from last week WERE old and ready to break anyways.

The practice kit

The practice kit

This is the view I have had running through the drum tracks.  The drum mic shown in the photo above is just a test for positioning. The actual kit I will record with will be a combination of various kits. A “Frankenstein” kit – very Halloween appropriate. Don’t worry there will be an ass load of photos from all of us next weekend, I’m sure.

Here is what will end up being the control room for the recording. Leo and Zac will be manning the board from here. There will be much coffee consumed here – yep….coffee.

Next week we will begin to show photos of what is actually happening on the demo – not just speculation. The start date is quickly approaching now. The clocks have been set back but it is all forward for S.N.F.
